EZ Folk profile: http://ezfolk.com/audio/bands/4044/ Radio Station "Band of Strangers": http://ezfolk.com/audio/index.php?mode=player&type=radio&id=903
Geoff Johnson has made an impressionable presence here at EZ Folk with his wonderfully arranged music/vocals and for his kindness, making many newcomers feel welcome here at EZFolk. I find his music very relaxing, meditative and spiritual. In my opinion, a great contribution to modern folk music today. Thank you Geoff for the honor and opportunity to put together this interview. I wish you much success on you latest CD releases!!
Holley Hall: Tell us about yourself and your musical back ground?
Geoff: I started writing poetry around ten years ago ,and then decided to try song writing ,having had no formal musical training it became somewhat of a challenge.
My first song was called ‘The Place ‘ and was about the perfect place you go to in your dreams, being a self taught keyboard player ,and with no knowledge of music production there were quite a few obstacles to overcome, being the eternal optimist certainly helped.
I have certainly climbed the hill , and now go under the name of Geoff Johnson’s Band of Strangers
I don’t have band members as such ,just anyone who wants to join in the fun hence the name Band of Strangers.
I am originally from the UK ,but am presently living in Fremantle W.A with my wife who plays acoustic guitar ,and my daughter who is trying to learn guitar. I write , produce and sing all my own songs ,I have done a few gigs at local pubs in the UK ,but prefer writing and composing, and like all singer/songwriters my ambition is to one day sell some of my music.
Holley: Who are your influences?
Geoff I have many musical influences mainly from the 60/70’s, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison , Gerry Rafferty ,Paul Simon etc etc
Holley: Where do you have you music posted online? How do you sell your CD’s/Audio Files?
Geoff I have my own website
geoffjohnsonmusic.com I also has a site on myspace.com ,I released my first CD on Cdbaby.com named ‘ Still Waters ‘ and have since completed two EP’s , ‘Red Earth and ‘The Stranger’ these are at present for sale on my website and will shortly be for sale also at Cdbaby.
Holley: What are your songs about?
Geoff My songs , are about anything that comes to mind from love songs (my favourite) to the closure of the mining industry in England ,to a serviceman being killed in a war and his daughter collecting his belongings .
Holley: Have you written any songs recently?
Geoff I have just put the finishing touches to a new song called , ‘Time to build a wall ‘ (another love song) ,I’m a romantic at heart, Gerry Rafferty wrote one of my all time fav’s called ‘It’s Easy to Talk ‘ I hope to one day write such a song.
Holley: In what ways does the place where you live , affect the music you create, or your taste in music?
Geoff The Place I live and it’s influence , West Australia is a lovely place it has the bluest sky and the greenest sea and is very inspirational .
Holley: Lately what musical periods or styles do you find yourself most drawn to as a listener?
Geoff Latest musical styles, Country Folk, Christian Folk ,Ballads, Blues Music, anything really that makes me tap my feet.
Holley: From your experiences, what advice you share with your fellow artists?
Geoff If you have a dream ,make it come true, the only thing stopping you, is you, I haven’t stopped dreaming and I don’t intend to ,not just yet anyhow !
